Monitoring Tools

Monitoring Tools

Monitoring tools have been installed and proved to be very useful when assessing the state of the 6BONE or finding information about hosts:

·         “BGP4+ operational report” created with ASPath-tree v.3.2, developed at Telecom Italia Lab by I. Guardini and P. Fasano. This application gives interesting information on prefixes advertised within the BGP4+ cloud. It produces for instance an insightful picture of the whole BGP4+ table

·         With another application created by M. Gargani at EdisonTel, we obtain a table of the number of route entries per peer. Each entry is split out in a number of pTLA’s, sTLA’s and un-aggregated prefixes. This gives a good idea about the filtering policies of certain sites. The filtering policy at CERN is to accept everything, but to forward only legal TLA’s

To get the data out of the router these applications use rsh. Since rsh for IPv6 is not yet supported on our routers, our IPv6 based web site obtains the information via NAT-PT.

Last but not least, a rather complete “Looking Glass” has been installed which allows for name and address look-up as well as traceroute and ping.
